a5c7b9f00b In the early twenty-first century Earth is visited by the Taelons, an androgynous-looking alien species who call themselves the "Companions" and claim they wish to share knowledge with the rest of humanity in the hopes of getting to know us better. William Boone, a former Special Forces soldier turned cop, rescues Da'an, the Taelon "overseer" for North America from assassination and is made the Companions' interspecies liaison. But Boone is really working for the human resistance who are trying to learn the Taelons' true motives, which may not begenerousthey claim.
The Taelon race, originally regarded with a mix of hostility and awkward acceptance by the humans, have started to reveal through accidents and espionage work, their eventual reasons and plans for the human race. They are at war with a species called the Jaridians, whom they are related to. However,Zo'or, head of the senate prepares humanity to be the foot soldiers in a war to enslave the Jaridians, Da'an, the only Taelon to side with humanity, assists a small group of freedom fighters attempting to decide where humanity should fit into this battle.
This series does exactly what Star Trek managed not to: Goes downhill fast. <br/><br/>It starts off with aliens making contact with us, they're partially (well, mostly) energy beings, and they look awesome, they act all nice and all, they say they come in peace, and they give us a ton of technology to help overhaul the earth's problems. And then the other shoe drops. As the series progresses, more and more, they gradually become the evil aliens visiting earth under the guise of being good guys, they become a freaking TV trope. They perform horrific genetic experimentation on people, they execute people, at one point, there's this asshole, Zo'or, he's so mad about the theft of some stupid thing of theirs that he asks Sandoval (who,farhe knows, is fiercely loyal to the aliens), where he comes from, when he tells him, he uses the Mothership weapons to wipe his birthplace out completely. And I WISH this was the worst atrocity they commit. <br/><br/>Oh, but then some new BS pops up about Jaridians, another alien race they're at war with, and that's why they really came to earth. And then it's revealed that the Jaridians and the Taelons were once the same race or some BS, and went along split evolutions, and need to merge to fix it before they both die, blah blah blah. This, of course, means the humans take the brunt of the conflict,the experimentation gets even worse. Oh did I mention they keep killing Boone? They killed him like twice in this series. The second time, they didn't even fully explain how he was reconstituted in the first place. <br/><br/>Anyway, it gets worse and worse, and then just when you think it can't possibly go downhill even more, the Taelons and Jaridians both go essentially extinct and are removed from the show. Only to be replaced by Atavus, which are basically energy vampires or something. Also, several episodes were out of order in the DVD. The one guy who was slightly interesting, the chimera, lost his alien part in some stupid episode that made no sense whatsoever and thus lost everything interesting about himself.<br/><br/>I watched it until the very end, and was severely disappointed. I expected some miracle to bring back the Taelons and Jaridians and allow them to live and go away, but instead, they just took the energy vampires away, who I couldn't have cared less about.<br/><br/>FIVE stars out of TEN, ten for it being good, zero for what it became. So it evens out to five.
It's a bit difficult to explain, why E:FC got 5 stars from me, even though it has a lot of weakpoints to offer, which are capable of ruining every trace of interest and motivation in watching the series. Let's start it from the beginning. There's the charismatic William Bone in season 1,he struggles to uncover the truth around the Taelons. A whole resistance army partially supports him and there are a lot of interesting characters in the story. So you might think, that nothing could go possibly wrong.<br/><br/>In the next seasons, he is replaced by Liam Kincaid. Liam does quite a good job, butthe episodes progress, first continuity issues appear. Many supposedly "worldshaking" events occur, just to see anyone in the next episode acting,if nothing ever happened. The plot development gets increasingly contradictory. Plus, they start decreasing the "important" characters involved in the story. The episodes in these seasons are of patchy quality. There are good and interesting ones, some rather bad and there are some pure fillers. I turned a blind eye to these flaws, because I was curious about how it would end. But then it came…<br/><br/>The devastating fifth season. Continuity no longer exists. Nor any sense or logic. Everything is turned upside down and the explanations for the events are really ridiculous and nowhere near enough convincable.<br/><br/>So, what originally startedan interesting series in season 1, steadily loses quality and ends in frustration. E:FC has some dramatical moments and well thought out episodes to offer, but even for sci-fi-fans I wouldn't gofargive a recommendation. Except if you plan to watch only 4 out of 5 seasons.<br/><br/>However, because of the good start and some highlights I ended up with 5/10.
